Saving Turtles,
One Life at a Time
Magnetic Island Network for Turtles (MINT) is dedicated to rehabilitating and protecting sea turtles in Queensland waters.
Our Mission
For over 15 years, MINT has been the lifeline for sea turtles in Magnetic Island. Led by an island of amazing people, we combine cutting-edge research with hands-on conservation to protect these ancient mariners for future generations.
Compassionate Care
Rehabilitating up to 6 turtles at a time at our Horseshoe Bay facility. Each turtle receives expert care costing ~$2,500 until ready for release.
Conservation
Protecting 12+ nesting sites across Horseshoe Bay and monitoring turtle populations through community-led research programs.
Community Powered
100% community-funded with no government support. Engaging locals through education, volunteer programs, and citizen science.
The Climate Crisis
Climate change is pushing sea turtles to the brink. Rising temperatures, extreme weather, and habitat loss threaten their survival. But there is hope.
Survival Decline
Hatchling survival dropped from 90% to 60%
Temperature Rise
Nest temperatures exceeding safe limits
Per Turtle
Cost of full rehabilitation and care
MINT is pioneering innovative solutions like palm frond cooling trials to protect nests from extreme heat. Our turtle hospital provides life-saving care, and our research helps inform conservation strategies worldwide. Every donation helps us continue this critical work.
Our Work in Action
From rescue to release, MINT provides comprehensive care and protection for sea turtles at every stage of their lives.
Turtle Hospital
State-of-the-art rehabilitation facility providing emergency care, surgery, and long-term recovery for injured turtles.
Beach Monitoring
Daily patrols to track nesting activity, protect eggs, and respond to turtle emergencies along Magnetic Island shores.
Education Programs
School visits, workshops, and community events to inspire the next generation of ocean guardians.
Innovation Research
Palm frond cooling trials and temperature monitoring to combat climate change impacts on nesting sites.
Success Stories
Every turtle has a story. Meet some of the amazing patients we've helped return to the ocean.
Toohey
Green sea turtle Toohey was found with boat strike injuries (the most common injury we treat). After receiving CT scans at JCU and comprehensive veterinary care costing approximately $2,500 AUD, Toohey was successfully released at Nelly Bay at 9:30 AM.
